It was early still when we pulled slowly into Molokini Crater, which is located just three miles of the south shore of Maui and about 9 miles from Maalaea Harbor. Molokini is a tuff cone, or vent, for Haleakala, a sleeping volcano, which formed half of Maui. This volcano is just over one million years old and 10,023 feet high. Pulling into this crescent shape one can’t help noticing the layers in the rock and the beautiful crystal clear blue waters. The welcoming committee usually is a school of black durgeon, or triggerfish. They follow the vessels as they come in for mooring, hoping for tidbits of food, which used to be thrown into the water but now is illegal since the area was declared a reserve and the unethical fish feeding has now stopped.
This time of year snorkelers gleefully announce that the humpback whale males singing is still loud and clear, adding to their snorkeling adventure. After a light breakfast of assorted pastries, fruit, coffee and juice, those who wish to venture into the 71 degree water, some in wetsuits and others feeling it isn’t necessary, jump in, cameras in hand and begin their tours. Later, some are ready to warm up a bit, or grab a snack and climb back on board to find a nice deli style lunch waiting, along with an open bar.
While making the 45 minute cruise back toward the harbor, whale watching adds to this wonderful adventure. It is spring break and many wonderful families are heading to Hawaii. If it is a snorkeling adventure you are looking for, our 92 foot yacht is comfortable, spacious, and our friendly crew will see to all your needs. Any time spent on the water is a good time and we are out here in the middle of the largest ocean on the planet. Your SEAFARI awaits!
