On a recent visit to the Hawaiian Islands, I had an opportunity to explore the ocean wildlife like never before. Having never taken a diving class, I was apprehensive about the prospect of scuba diving, but snuba diving was the perfect alternative. As its name suggests, snuba is a hybrid of snorkeling and scuba. You use all of the same basic gear as a scuba diver, except instead of using a tank strapped to your back, your air supply remains on the surface.
I had been snorkeling in Maui before, but Maui snuba diving was an entirely unique experience. Since I was able to go deep below the surface, I could examine the coral and creatures living in them like never before. In addition, I also had the opportunity to see several rays scouring the seafloor and a massive school of sea turtles surveying the island.
